Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country on the west coast of Africa, bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, and the Atlantic Ocean. As of the 2008 Census, the nation is home to 3,476,608 people and covers 111,369 square kilometres (43,000 sq mi).
The history of Liberia is unique among African nations because of its relationship with the United States. It is one of the few countries in Africa, and the only country in West Africa, without roots in the European Scramble for Africa. It was founded and colonized by freed American slaves with the help of a private organization called the American Colonization Society in 1821-22, on the premise American slaves would have greater freedom and equality there.
The country of Liberia is just one of many nations that struggle with the supply of clean water. With a population of almost 3.5 million people, the there is not enough water to go around that is dirty, much less clean. Last year a Comprehensive Food Security and Nutrition Survey reported that 68 percent of people across Liberia rely on untreated wells, rivers, ponds, creeks and swamps for drinking water.
Responding to the needs of her people, Africa’s Iron Lady, the first female president of an African nation, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, is working tirelessly to improve the quality of life and water across the nation.
She is a leading promoter of peace, justice and democratic rule. She grew up in Liberian capital of Monrovia where she married and had four sons.
